TEXAS was was the state with the most deaths resulting from large truck crashes in 2022, according to the latest figures available from the National Safety Council. With 810 fatalities that year, the Lone Star State easily surpassed the sum of Florida and California’s fatal truck crashes combined. “Since 2016, the number of trucks involved in injury crashes has increased 18% and, sadly, the number of deaths increased 2% from 2021 and is up 49% in the last ten years,” Dan Sciano notes. “Reckless and unsafe driving is often a result of failed company safety management systems and the inability to enforce safety standards by commercial motor carriers. This indifference to safety puts Texans’ lives at risk.”

Experience and Leadership

Sciano is Board Certified in Personal Injury Trial Law and Civil Trial Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. This dual certification is a key credential that supports his leadership status among the plaintiffs’ bar. Out of 110,000 lawyers licensed to practice law in Texas, only 890 – less than 1% – are dual Board Certified. He also helps author the board certification exam questions for Truck Accident Law used by the National Board of Trial Advocacy (NBTA), a nonprofit organization devoted to improving the quality of trial advocacy and aiding consumers in their selection of experienced legal representation. Dan is triple Board Certified by the NBTA in Civil Trial Law, Civil Practice Advocacy, and Truck Accident Law. NBTA Board Certification is the only accreditation for Truck Accident Law recognized by the American Bar Association and the U.S. Supreme Court. His specialized skills and dedication to victims of truck accidents include authoring articles and thoughtful leadership pieces. He has also spoken for decades on issues affecting the trial of trucking crashes at the State Bar of Texas’ advanced Continuing Legal Education (CLE) seminars and numerous local bar associations. By a vote of his peers, Sciano has been listed for 29 straight years to The Best Lawyers in America® for Personal Injury Litigation - Plaintiffs.

Tackling Texas Trends

Sciano’s devotion to protecting Texas residents is unwavering. He notes the sand, rock, and gravel haulers are a significant sector of the industry with a particularly troubling safety record, too often supported by small chameleon motor carriers – trucking companies cited or closed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). These companies are notorious for having marginal safety records or tenuous financial situations, and they try to elude the FMCSA by quickly changing their names and addresses and restarting operations.

“Due, in part, to the lack of adequate enforcement officers,” Sciano notes, “these chameleon carriers spread like a cancer, driving out safer motor carriers in the industry and ultimately endangering all of us.” With his finger on the pulse of these troubling trends, Texans injured due to chameleon motor carriers and other unsafe drivers can find solace in his advocacy. Daniel J.T. Sciano is a distinguished 43-year Board Certified lawyer whose career has been punctuated by a series of remarkable trucking cases that have captured headlines and – more importantly – delivered justice where it was due.

The legal landscape is fraught with challenges, Sciano notes, but his impact in and out of the courtroom has earned him the trust and gratitude of clients and the legal community. “We zealously represent innocent victims within the bounds of the law,” Sciano says. “Our record of success is a testament to our pursuit of justice.”
